Cave Temples of Mahabalipuram

Beautifully carved rock- cut temples in Mahabalipuram, India.

Mahabalipuram is a historic town just 45 minutes drive away from Chennai. This town is famous for the beautifully carved rock-cut temples that are more than a 1000  years old . Each sculptures and cut carvings on the rocks depicts stories from Mahabharata, the ancient hindu epic.

I left Chennai at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon. It was extremely hot but I had only two days left before my flight back to London and it was the only time I had to view this beautiful city. I am glad that I braved the heat to see this artistic treasure. Beautiful is an understatement! These temples are awe inspiring with history etched in the carvings.

Mahabalipuram is an excellent site to visit if you are interested in culture and history. These sea shore temples will mesmerise with its beauty. You can easily spend a day marvelling at this piece of art. I highly recommend this place and is a must see if you are in Chennai. However its best visited in winters as the heat in the summer can be unbearable.
